  4.     Since critical eyebrows were raised at my opposition to the
  5. construction of the Third Temple in Jerusalem (RELIGION, Oct.
  6. 16), may I bring to your attention none other than our prophets'
  7. and sages' protesting building temples and sanctuaries when the
  8. miniature temples of society -- our families, streets, schools,
  9. political and social institutions -- do not conduct their
  10. day-to-day affairs with the sanctity reflecting humanity, which was
  11. created in the image of God. Were Isaiah to scan TIME's weekly
  12. reportage of the enormous ailments of society, would he not exclaim
  13. once again, "What need I of all your sacrifices?"

  19.     One need not be a fanatic to appreciate that the security of
  20. the Al Aqsa Mosque, which occupies a site near that proposed for
  21. the Third Temple, is as sacred to Muslims as the security of Israel
  22. is to Jews. Failure to understand is to deny the reality of a
  23. situation that is already dangerously volatile.
